Several youths from the inner city made a positive step towards a positive future as they embark on the “Positive Behaviour for a Positive Future “behavior change programme. The porgramme, conceptualized by Justice George Young, a member of the executive of the Lay Magistrates Association, Kingston Chapter and recipient of the Governor General Award for Excellence (2015) and is being delivered by Justice Young, in partnership with the Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
This positive behaviour change program commences in April and concludes September 2016. Worskops will be conducted on the second and third Saturdays of each month to approximately 20 at risk youths. It is anticipated that the graduates of this programme will:
- Make better use of higher educational opportunities.
- Make better use of vocational training opportunities.
and - Take on board a positive behavioral attitude/aptitude which will enhance their chances of being employed and enjoy positive social relationships.
Topics to be explored on the course includes: Who Am I; Change Management; Conflict Resolution, Financial Health among others.
Justice Young is passionate about being a change agent in Jamaica. “As an I Believe Initiative Ambassador, my intention is to deliver the Positive Behaviour for a Positive Future…This program is in keeping with the I Believe Initiative slogan:
There are some things wrong in Jamaica which can be fixed by the things that are right with Jamaica."
The programme is geared towards unemployed and disengaged youths aged 17 – 35 years from the Rae Town community. At the close of this first exercise, George intends to conduct a proper evaluation before delivering the programme in another community in 2017. The programme was officially launched at a brief ceremony at St Michael Primary School last Thursday and was attended by officers from the Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, members of the Lay Magistrates’ association – Kingston Chapter, programme participants and other supporters.
